Daimler added the Maybach Landaulet — an open-top version of its Maybach 62 S — to its lineup for 2009. Maybach will produce only a handful of the cars for a select few customers with exceptionally deep pockets.

True to the tradition of exclusive landaulets, the roof of the car can be opened fully at the rear, while the driver’s compartment remains completely enclosed. The passengers are then able to enjoy the sky above.

2009 Maybach Landaulet - Side View

Maybach engineers have removed the rear roof module in order to afford passengers an unobstructed view of the sky. The side walls remain, and have been reinforced with an integral tubular steel structure. As these measures have not altered the silhouette of the luxury saloon, the complete interior with its reclining seats remain unchanged.

When closed the black soft-top of the Landaulet rests on the frame formed by the roof bows, and is wind and weather-proof. When requested by the passengers, the driver operates a switch in the centre console.

The 2009 Landaulet was first launched as a concept version last year at the Dubai auto show, and earlier this year Maybach announced the production version. The convertiblelike four-door Landaulet will go on sale in USA starting December at a price of $1.35 million!

2009 Maybach Landaulet - Interrior

“The Landaulet is for a superrich individual who wants something that is extremely extraordinary and enjoys being driven in a car with acres of sky above them,” Hans-Dieter Multhaupt, vice president of program management for Maybach said.

The Landaulet is designed as a chauffeur-driven limousine. The soft partial convertible top above rear-seat passengers opens from the B-pillar back so passengers in the rear seat can be seen and enjoy the sunshine.

The Maybach’s rear doors and side windows remain intact. The driver’s compartment is covered by a nonremovable hard top. Multhaupt said many of the Maybach Landaulets “will be fitted with a glass panel that separates the driver and the passenger, like the cars of the past.”

2009 Maybach Landaulet - Performance

The Maybach Landaulet is powered by an uprated V12 engine which Maybach engineers have developed further for the Maybach 57 S and Maybach 62 S together with the specialists at Mercedes-AMG. Thanks to twin turbochargers and water intercooling, the V12 develops a maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp from a displacement of 5980 cubic centimetres. This is continuously available between 4800 and 5100 rpm, and the engine also delivers an impressive maximum torque of 1000 newton metres between 2000 and 4000 rpm.

In line with the Maybach approach, the twelve-cylinder biturbo engine is hand-assembled in the Mercedes-AMG engine workshops, or Manufaktur. The “One man, one engine” philosophy is reflected by the signature of the technician responsible on the characteristic model plate, which is attached to the engine cover of the V12 biturbo – a guarantee of the greatest care and highest quality.

Equipped with the AIRMATIC DC (Dual Control) electronically controlled air suspension system and the Adaptive Damping System (ADS II), the Maybach Landaulet achieves an outstanding level of ride comfort whilst at the same time proving that even a prestigious automobile can display excellent agility and handling qualities.

2009 Maybach Landaulet - Rear Side

In addition to large, internally ventilated brake discs – with twin callipers at the front – both the Maybach Landaulet and the Maybach 62 S are equipped with two electro-hydraulic Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC™) braking systems working in tandem. Together with ESP®, ASR, ABS and Brake Assist, this provides the Maybach Landaulet with the very latest in effective, high-tech handling control systems.

The customers have the opportunity to select custom exterior paint colors and interior trims and make request for other features above and beyond the factory option list.

2006 Maybach 62 - Front View

Everything needed for entertainment, communication and sheer pleasure during a journey in the Maybach is included as standard: from a DVD player to a TV receiver, from a refrigerated compartment to a cordless telephone with two handsets. At the same time the extensive range of standard equipment leaves plenty of scope for individuality – another way in which the luxury brand is following the tradition of the legendary Maybach cars of earlier years.

2006 Maybach 62 - On The Road

The extensive range of standard and optional equipment gives Maybach customers over two million ways of equipping their high-end luxury car to their personal taste. All this can also be complemented with high-quality accessory items which have been specifically developed for the Maybach – from a luggage set to a champagne goblet of sterling silver, from a humidor to a golf bag and from floor mats of the finest velour to a fluffy travel rug.

The Maybach brand is bringing out the new Maybach Zeppelin to spearhead its luxury saloon model range. The new model, which is receiving its premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, represents the absolute zenith in the high-end luxury saloon segment. This makes it a worthy successor to the legendary Maybach Zeppelin, which was revered worldwide as the ultimate in high-class automotive engineering in the 1930s. The hallmark features of the new Maybach flagship’s unique sense of style include a stunning paint finish, featuring a shoulderline in a contrasting colour, as well as the exquisite, meticulously crafted materials in the interior, whose long list of optional extras includes a world first – a highly sophisticated perfume atomiser. The new model’s performance even outclasses the rest of the Maybach range, making it the most powerful Maybach ever. In a nutshell: the Maybach Zeppelin epitomises stylish elegance and the art of vehicle manufacture at its most refined as no car has ever done before. The new Maybach Zeppelin is being built in a limited edition of just 100 worldwide.

Maybach Zeppelin - Cockpit

Even today, the name “Zeppelin” has an incomparable ring to it in the realm of high-end luxury cars. As in bygone times, Maybach is once again building the Maybach Zeppelin for drivers who are seeking something extra special, even in this most luxurious of automotive segments. Not only do the Maybach 57 Zeppelin and Maybach 62 Zeppelin stand out for their exquisite elegance, inventive ideas and phenomenal performance, only one hundred of these special model versions of the high-end luxury saloons will be made worldwide. The Zeppelin gets special 20-inch wheels in what Daimler calls a “chrome shadow finish.” We believe this top-deck car’s new, edgier exterior mirrors will replace the round, decidedly 1990s units on lesser Maybachs. The exhaust tips now number four, and the taillights are darkened. Specific to the Zeppelin is the shoulder line painted in Rocky Mountains light brown, but you can have your Maybach painted any other color as well, if you insist. The hood ornament is altered with Zeppelin lettering. The recommended interior color combination is California Beige with Stromboli Black. The wood is finished in piano black, and your feet rest on lambswool carpets.

The Maybach Zeppelin will be officially revealed in Geneva and is said to revive the spirit of the 1930’s 1930′s Maybach Zeppelin, but the fact is that it’s really a special edition version of the Maybach 57 S and the long-wheelbase version, the 62 S. The new model will be produced in a limited run of just 100 units with prices set at $526,500 for the Zepelin 57 and at $613,600 for the Zeppelin 62. Both models feature a tweaked version of the firm’s twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12, which now delivers 640HP (+28 hp) and a peak torque of 737.6 lbs-ft.

Maybach Zeppelin - Interrior Design

At a time when most people are just trying to make ends meet, Maybach will launch a new model at the top of the high-end luxury sedan segment. Limited to only 100 units, the Maybach 57 Zeppelin and Maybach 62 Zeppelin will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. Maybach claims “the name ‘Zeppelin’ has an incomparable ring to it in the realm of high-end luxury cars.” However, most would instead think of “Led Zeppelin” the 70s rock band from England or even the famous Hindenburg Zeppelin that went down in a ball of flames and ended the use of the airships in 1937.

Maybach Zeppelin - Left Side

Nevertheless, Maybach celebrates the Zeppelin name by plastering it all over the vehicle. It can be found on the hood emblem, trunk, front center console, partition screen (available as an option on the 62 Zeppelin), standard silver champagne flutes, door sill panels, as well as on the key ring.

Maybach Zeppelin - Logo

Just like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce and other ultra high-end car brands, Daimler’s Maybach brand is making steady money. So much so, that even in this ever dimming global economic scene, the luxury brand will debut a new model called the Maybach Zeppelin. Touted as the “absolute zenith in high-end luxury” sedans, the Zeppelin lineup — based on the current range-topping 57 S and 62 S — uses nothing but the best interior materials and employs a more powerful AMG-built V-12 engine.

Maybach Zeppelin - Rear Side

With the exception of 28 more horses under the hood (for a grand total of 640 hp), you may ask, aren’t the current Maybachs essentially the same thing? Well, yes and no. Both varieties offer customers with near endless interior and exterior options for the full customization of their “land yachts,” but to stay true to the exclusive Zeppelin moniker, designers implemented a few subtle changes. For instance, new are the set of 20-in. alloys finished in a Chrome Shadow Finish, darker red tinted tail lights out back, sleeker side mirrors and the unmistakable “Maybach Zeppelin” badges plastered on the hood, trunk, door sills, partition and standard issue silver champagne flutes.

Maybach Zeppelin - Rear View

Not seeing the differences? We told you they were subtle, but wait until you hear about the Zeppelin’s most highly regarded feature: A world’s first plexiglass sphere perfume atomizer ($5104). The Maybach-patented atomizer dispenses a “delicate scent” of the customer’s choice throughout the rear cabin for a refreshing aroma while cruising. Only 100 editions will be produced for worldwide sale beginning March 3, so those with the funds better act quick. Deliveries are slated for September of this year. Let’s not forget price: An easy 406,000 euro ($523,465) for the 57 Zeppelin and 473,000 euro ($609,850) for its bigger brother, the 62 Zeppelin.

The Maybach high-performance show car “Exelero” was unveiled to the world for the first time this afternoon in the Tempodrom in Berlin. The 700-hp two-seater with a V-12 biturbo engine is a unique custom model produced for Fulda Reifenwerke, which is using the Maybach Exelero as a reference vehicle for a newly developed generation of wide tyres. The German manufacturer of luxury cars built the unique model as a modern interpretation of its legendary streamlined sports car from the 1930s, thereby forging a link with the historical predecessor, which at that time was likewise based on a powerful Maybach automobile (SW 38) and used by Fulda for tyre tests.

Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH (German pronunciation: [ˈmaɪbax]) (founded 1909) is a German luxury car manufacturer. It was founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach with his son Karl Maybach as director. The company was originally a subsidiary of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH and was itself known as “Luftfahrzeug-Motoreinbau GmbH” (literally “Aircraft Engine Installation Company”) until 1918. Today, the brand is owned by Daimler AG and based in Stuttgart.

2005 Maybach Exelero - Rear Side

A one-off custom-built Maybach was unveiled in May 2005 at the Tempodrom in Berlin. Commissioned by tyre company Fulda, the Exelero is a chopped-down two-seater coupe, though it’s more than just a show car – in tests at the Nardo high-speed oval, the prototype reached a speed of 218.38mph, despite weighing over 2.66 tonnes. It is capable of acceleration from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds.

2005 Maybach Exelero - Side View

The car’s design was the result of a competition amongst students at the Pforzheim Polytechnic Department of Transport Design, which has worked on show vehicles for Fulda in the past. The design of 24-year-old Fredrik Burchhardt was chosen, and his work was co-ordinated with that of the Maybach design centre in Sindelfingen. The project, based on the Maybach 57 limousine, required a certain amount of re-engineering; the A-pillar and doors had to be shifted rearwards, and the steering column, pedals and gearshift all re-located. The standard 550bhp V12 engine was bored out to 5.9 litres, and tuned for 700bhp and over 738lb ft of torque. With final dimensions of 5890mm long, 2140mm wide and just 1390mm high, the car was kitted out with a full-spec interior, including leather, neoprene, aluminium and carbonfibre finishes.

2005 Maybach Exelero - Test Driver

Maybach says the car, built by Stola in Turin, is “a one-off vehicle created to showcase the new ultra-high performance Exelero tyre range from leading tyre manufacturer Fulda”; it’s not the first time the two companies have teamed up, as back in 1938 Fulda demonstrated its tyres on a Maybach SW 38 limousine. There are, however, “no plans to produce the model in series”, though it has been certified for on-road use.
