(From BMW Press Release)

The new two-seater Z4 Coupe and Z4 M Coupe are a dynamic duo for those special occasions.

Whether it is driving through tight mountain roads, enjoying comfortable point-to-point long-distance touring, or just cruising the highways, the BMW Z4 Coupe and Z4 M Coupe are the consummate high-performance machines for demanding high-performance lifestyles.

The Z4 Coupe and Z4 M Coupe were conceived from the start for the highest standards of sports motoring. Both feature a weight-optimised body, with a chassis and suspension that are superbly matched for every situation. In keeping with the BMW philosophy of building cars for drivers, the Z4 Coupe boasts a class-leading 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine while the Z4 M Coupe has a powerful 3.2-litre six cylinder.

From the moment, the BMW Z4 Coupe Concept Car was presented at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, it aroused emotions and created great expectations. Now those expectations can be fulfilled. Both will join the successful Z4 Roadster. Like the Roadster, the Z4 Coupe and Z4 M Coupe will be built at the BMW Z4 factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA.

2007 BMW Z4 Coupe - Performance View

With a classic coupe silhouette and the “Hofmeister kick” on the rear side windows so typical of the brand, the BMW Z4 Coupe and Z4 M Coupe stand out as truly sporting BMWs.

Under the steeply racked tailgate is a surprising amount of luggage room in the large, deep boot. With a capacity of up to 340 litres – 300 litres in the BMW Z4 M Coupe – the BMW Z4 Coupe has luggage space quite exceptional for a two-seater. It is even able to carry two golf bags. The integrated roll-up cover extends over a volume of 285 litres to hide precious items from prying eyes.

Luggage space is further complemented by a glove box, two door pockets and a 10 litre compartment in the rear bulkhead that locks automatically with the central locking. Two further boxes to the left and right of this central compartment offer a capacity of 3.7 litres each.

2007 BMW Z4 Coupe - Top View

The tailgate is opened via the lock housed conveniently and out of sight in the BMW logo.

The BMW Z4 Coupe Powering the BMW Z4 Coupe is the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that has won the Engine of the Year Award several times. The VALVETRONIC and BMW double-VANOS engine boasts a maximum output of 195 kW at 6,600 rpm with a torque peak of 315 Nm consistently all the way from 2,500 to 4,000 rpm. The 3.0-litre also complies with Euro 4 and ULEV II emission standards. The 3.0-litre is not only easy on the environment but also returns outstanding fuel economy. It will return 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres in the EU test cycle. Of course, a stylish two-seater must also offer performance. The BMW Z4 Coupe takes just 5.7 seconds to sprint from zero to 100 km/h with the car accelerating from 80 km/h to 120 km/h in further gear in just 5.2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Weighing just 161 kilos, this engine is the lightest engine in the world in its performance class by virtue of its magnesium-aluminium construction.

Give the car’s performance potential, BMW has delivered a chassis and driving dynamics that will satisfy the most demanding driver.

The chassis and suspension is set up for superb on-road handling and traction. Like all true sports cars, the BMW Z4 Coupe is rear drive with a well-balanced axle load distribution and low centre of gravity to aid driving performance. Electro-mechanical power steering aids the dynamic and agile set-up of the car.

To complement the superb handling BMW has added DSC Dynamic Stability Control with ASC Automatic Stability Control and CBC Cornering Brake Control.

DSC offers high levels of active safety while ASC is designed to specifically control slip of the drive wheels by reducing engine output when required, applying the brakes selectively on a drive wheel about to spin. CBC, in turn, reduces any oversteer by controlling brake pressure asymmetrically whenever the brakes are applied slightly in a bend.

Added to this trio of safety devices is DTC Dynamic Traction Control, which maximises brake pressure whenever required, for example, in an emergency braking manoeuvre, to keep stopping distances to a minimum.

2007 BMW Z4 Coupe - Trunk View

Like all BMWs the Z4 Coupe cockpit is tailored to the driver. All controls and instruments are perfectly positioned in a sound ergonomic arrangement.

Like the BMW 1 Series, 3 Series and 6 Series, the Z4 Coupe will feature runflat tyres as standard with the Z4 M Coupe using a small compressor and a rapid-action sealant, which enables the car to be driven at a reduced speed of 80 km/h. Doing without a spare or car jack in the Z4 M Coupe saves more than 20 kilos.

The BMW Z4 Coupe will be available with either a six-speed manual transmission, or six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with paddle shifts.

The BMW Z4 M Coupe Being based on the BMW Z4 M Roadster means the Z4 M Coupe is not only one of the most powerful and dynamic two-seaters available, but the Coupe benefits from extra stiffness provided by the design of the fixed roof.

The result is an extremely strong body in terms of both torsional and flexural stiffness. Despite the addition of the roof, rear hatch and extra weight of the rear windows, the BMW Z4 M Coupe is just 5 kilos heavier than the Z4 M Roadster.

This low weight and high power of the 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine provide an outstanding power-to-weight ratio of just 6.6 kg or 14.5 lb per kilowatt of engine power.

Indeed, the 3.2-litre six-cylinder is one of the world’s truly great engines. It is the same straight-six M engine that also features in the BMW M3 and BMW Z4 M Roadster. Its vital statistics are impressive, with a displacement of 3,246 cc, 252 kW maximum output at an engine speed of 7,900 rpm and a maximum engine speed of 8,000 rpm. No less than 80 per cent of the engine’s maximum torque of 365 Nm is available from just 2,000 rpm. A zero to 100 km/h sprint takes just 5.0 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

2007 BMW Z4 Coupe - Rear Side

Of course, flexibility is the key to the engine in the BMW Z4 M Coupe. It is mated to a standard six-speed manual gearbox that allows the right gear, at the right time.

The superior engine and drivetrain of the BMW Z4 M Coupe is matched by an equally superior high-performance suspension. In its basic concept, the suspension is identical to that of the BMW Z4 M Roadster, but has been geared specifically to the particular requirements of the Coupe.

This high degree of dynamic superiority was clearly proven by the BMW Z4 M Coupe on the Nordschleife, the Northern Circuit of Nurburgring, where the Z4 M Coupe outperforms the lap times of even the BMW M3 and the BMW Z4 M Roadster.

2007 BMW Z4 Coupe - Rear View

The chassis and suspension borrows key elements from the BMW M3.

Visually the BMW Z4 M Coupe offers the unmistakable M styling cues. The on-road stance is accentuated by a powerful-looking front air dam with its distinct X-shaped lines and openings, large air intake scoops and the deeply imbedded kidney grille, all complemented by 18-inch wheels and exclusive double-spoke light-alloy rims in typical M design that fill out the dynamic wheel arches with purpose.

At the rear there is an extra-wide brake light, and the distinctive M chrome-plated dual exhausts at the extremities with a horizontally-arranged diffuser in between.

The high-performance 225/45 ZR18 tyres at the front and 255/40 ZR18 tyres at the rear are perfectly matched to the power and dynamism of the car.

Inside M touches abound with the colour of the instruments typical of the BMW M philosophy with red needles combined with permanent white illumination.

(From BMW UK press release)

The new BMW 1 Series goes on sale in spring 2007 and features a model line up that includes the most fuel efficient production vehicle BMW has ever produced. The introduction of a three-door model and a revised five-door come as a raft of new fuel-saving innovations are rolled out across the range.

Technologies such as Brake Energy Regeneration, Automatic Start-Stop function and Electric Power Steering are combined with lower rolling resistant tyres and a gearshift change indicator to encourage economical motoring. These innovations are in addition to the use of variable valve technologies and High-Precision Direct Injection engines on some 1 Series models that boost power output but cut fuel consumption and emissions.

The BMW 118d, BMW’s most economical car, manages its record 60.1mpg figure courtesy of these features in conjunction with the use of further lightweight engineering. The car now has an aluminium crankcase to save weight. Aside from the BMW Hydrogen 7, the BMW 118d also posts the lowest ever CO2 emissions of any BMW recording 123g/km (putting it into the Band C category for Vehicle Excise Duty).

Other engines in the new 1 Series range record economy improvements of up to 24 per cent compared to the previous model, while emissions have also been cut by up to 21 per cent. These improvements have not been to the detriment of driving pleasure. The new 1 Series is powered by a range of engines whose outputs have increased by up to 20hp with a consequential improvement in performance figures.

2008 BMW 1-Series 3-door - Front Side

New fuel saving technology

Brake Energy Regeneration (iGR) makes its debut on the 1 Series. The system uses an Intelligent Alternator Control (IAC) and an Absorbent Glass Mat battery to recycle previously lost energy, in turn saving fuel. This is achieved as the IAC reduces drag on the engine by only engaging when required to charge the battery, whereas a traditional alternator is always pulling power from the engine. Additionally, the energy generated by the engine on over-run (under braking or descending a hill) was previously wasted. Now this lost energy is utilised by the IAC to charge the battery. iGR alone is responsible for a three per cent improvement in fuel economy.

The new 1 Series comes with Automatic Start-Stop function to cut fuel consumption. Standard on all manual transmission models (except 130i), the system automatically switches the engine off when the vehicle is stationary and the driver puts the car into neutral. To restart the driver only need engage the clutch again before pulling away in the normal manner. Should he not want to use the Automatic Start-Stop function it can be manually switched off.

The use of Electric Power Steering results in a 90 per cent energy saving compared to a conventional mechanical hydraulic steering system. Power assistance is now provided by an electric motor that works only when required, such as turning a corner. Other fuel saving enhancements have been made courtesy of various ancillary devices, such as the air-conditioning power supply being disconnected from the drivetrain when not in use. Even flaps behind the kidney grille improve economy, closing up for improved aerodynamic efficiency should the engine require less airflow. The feature also improves cold starting times.

Engine changes and statistics in detail

130i: World’s lightest six-cylinder production engine with VALVETRONIC and Bi-VANOS technology achieves zero to 62mph in 6.0 seconds (five-door is 6.1 seconds) and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Output is 265bhp while peak torque is 315Nm. Combined fuel consumption is 34.0mpg and CO2 emissions are 197g/km.

120i: New four-cylinder engine with High-Precision Direct Injection and Bi-VANOS technology achieves zero to 62mph in 7.7 seconds (7.8 seconds for five-door) before going on to a top speed of 139mph. Output is 170hp (up 20hp) while peak torque is now 210Nm (up 10Nm). Combined fuel consumption is 44.1mpg (improves by 17 per cent), CO2 emissions are 152g/km (down 16 per cent).

Low running costs

The plethora of new technology showcased in the BMW 1 Series will have a significant impact on cost of ownership for customers. For the company car driver all but two engine variants now sit in the Band C category for Vehicle Excise Duty. This results in a saving of up to £505 for someone paying 40 per cent tax and up to £278 for those in the 22 per cent tax bracket. For all owners fuel consumption improvement means a 12,000 miles-a-year driver will save approximately £250 off the fuel bill.

2008 BMW 1-Series 3-door - Side View

Traction and safety

All BMW 1 Series models come with Dynamic Stability Control with Dynamic Traction Control for the best combination driving pleasure and safety. DSC allows drivers to make the most of the 1 Series’ 50:50 weight distribution and rear-wheel drive configuration for the best on-road performance. The BMW 130i comes with five additional functions with its DSC+ system for enhanced convenience and driver safety: Hill Start Assistant, Brake Pre-tensioning, Brake Drying, Brake Fade Compensation and Soft Stop.

All BMW 1 Series have six airbags as standard, the Brake Force Display function on the rear lights to highlight sharp braking and Run-flat tyres with Tyre Puncture Warning System.

A new style of BMW 1 Series

To herald the introduction of the latest generation of engines, BMW’s designers have refreshed the interior and exterior styling of the five-door model. The 1 Series now features a larger kidney grille for improved airflow to the engine. The lower front spoiler has also been reprofiled to create a larger air intake, while the spoiler protrudes further for a more pronounced, sporting look. The headlamp cluster remains the same size but a darker cover gives a subtle, more distinguished front end.

At the rear a restyled bumper gives the impression of a wider, lower car. The rear lamp cluster now features a new arrangement of lights, but retains its original shape.

The new three-door 1 Series features the same styling cues but its side view is naturally different. The passenger doors are longer than those on the five-door model and are also frameless in the style of a coupé. Inside, customers will also be able to choose between either a four-seat or a five-seat configuration. In the four-seat arrangement rear passengers are separated by a central storage compartment and sit in more sculptured seats. As a no-cost option the five-seat layout offers the traditional bench seat standard on the five-door 1 Series. The introduction of higher quality materials and minor changes to the layout of the interior enhance customer comfort and practicality.

2008 BMW 1-Series 3-door - Rear Side

Optional highlights

The new 1 Series comes with MP3 and USB stick capability for the best in in-car entertainment. Customers with their favourite music loaded on an Apple iPod or a USB stick can now plug these into the car to continue their listening. Tracks are selected via steering wheel controls or the iDrive system.

The optional Adaptive Headlights that turn to follow the intended course of the car have been improved on the 1 Series. Cornering light function is added to the package as standard. This means two additional lights turn at speeds of between 22 and 40mph to further illuminate the direction of travel on a twisting road.

Since its launch in September 2004, the BMW 1 Series has proved a popular choice in the UK with 51,492 sold to date and in excess of 200,000 worldwide. The new three- and five-door BMW 1 Series models will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show in March and go on sale in the UK at the same time.

(From BMW Press Release)

Sheer Driving pleasure now also to be found in the compact class:
(The BMW 1 Series 5-door hatchback model will not be offered in the US. The availability and introduction timing of future 1 Series variants in the US has not been determined.)

Munich. In the autumn of 2004 BMW will unveil for the very first time a compact class automobile – the BMW 1 Series with five doors and a length of 4.23 metres, making this new model series precisely 24 centimetres shorter than a 3 Series saloon. The typical BMW drive concept, powerful engines, high-grade equipment and the experience of sheer driving fun offer a new and unique alternative in this particular market segment.

Right from the very first glance there is no doubt that this new five-door sports-hatch is a BMW through and through: The long wheelbase with a short front overhang, the lower roof line with the typical C-pillar kink and the characteristic front end with the “kidney” grille and double headlamps give the 1 Series a face that stands out in a crowd. The practical hatch opens to reveal a variable luggage compartment that offers the driver and passengers 330 to 1150 litres of storage space for even larger items of sports equipment for a variety of leisure activities.

2008 BMW 1-Series 5-door - Cockpit View

Unique agility and steering precision.

Whether loaded or not, the 1 Series is always sheer pleasure to drive: The seating position offering long-distance driving comfort and the exemplary, clearly structured cockpit provide the driver with perfect ergonomics during his “driving experience”. After starting the engine at the push of a button, one immediately senses that typical driving pleasure only a BMW can induce. Thanks to its agility and steering precision unique in the compact class, the BMW 1 Series not only ensures sporty but smooth handling of winding country roads, but also facilitates effortless urban driving pleasure. This is because – like all other BMW automobiles – the 1 Series has a front-mounted engine and rear wheel drive. Even in the tightest of bends there is no torque steer to be felt, the rear wheels having optimal traction when transferring the engine’s power onto the tarmac.

Moreover, this concept offers an ideal balance of weight between the technically elaborate aluminium front axle and the five-link rear suspension. Together all of these characteristics facilitate further advantages such as optimal traction even when fully loaded and on hills. The drive and suspension concept is further enhanced by a particularly stiff body and excellent aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of just 0.29.

On the whole no other vehicle in the compact class offers such a distinctively harmonious symbiosis of sporty driving characteristics and suitability for long-distance travel as the BMW 1 Series.

Four engine variants from 115 to 163 bhp.

When the car is launched customers will have an immediate choice of four four-cylinder engines. The models 116i (85 kW / 115 bhp) und 120i (110 kW / 150 bhp) feature further developed and refined BMW petrol engines. The two diesel versions, the 118d (90 kW / 122 bhp) and the120d (120 kW / 163 bhp) are equipped with high-torque diesel engines. Needless to say, all BMW 1 Series cars meet with EU4 emission standards. A smooth-shifting manual six-speed gearbox (five-speed on the 116i) or, optionally, a comfortable six-speed automatic deliver power to large-size 16-inch wheels with emergency running properties, thereby contributing to the most dynamic performance available in this segment. Furthermore, the BMW 1 Series is one of the most economical in its class.

Active and passive safety at the highest level.

Robust, large disc brakes provide supreme stopping power in any situation. By means of two-stage brake light clusters the BMW 1 Series indicates to vehicles behind whether the brakes are being applied normally or hard. And the extensive range of standard safety equipment, which includes DSC Dynamic Stability Control, DBC Dynamic Brake Control, Electronic Differential Lock as well as a complete airbag system comprising head airbags for all seats, complies with the most stringent safety requirements. These safety features and an exemplary protective body structure are the best prerequisites for achieving five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test.

2008 BMW 1-Series 5-door - Doors View

Equipment options normally associated with more luxurious classes.

In addition to the wide range of basic equipment, there are a myriad of possibilities to individualize the BMW 1 Series with optional equipment available in the usual high BMW quality. Many of these have previously only been seen in higher vehicle segments. These include: Convenient keyless access, Bluetooth mobile interface, sports seats with backrest width adjustment, acoustic PDC Park Distance Control at the front and the rear, Bi-Xenon headlights and a choice of high-performance audio and navigation systems, which can also be operated centrally or by voice control utilizing the BMW state-of-the-art iDrive operating concept.

With its unique concept, the BMW 1 Series is intended to target customers who have always appreciated the practical aspects of previously available compact vehicles but have, until now, searched in vain for an automobile that takes into consideration their increased demands in terms of driving pleasure and individuality. Whilst fully meeting these customer requirements, the BMW 1 Series offers in addition high-quality product substance wrapped up in a modern and attractive design.

Overview of specifications

116i 85 kW /115 bhp at 6000 rpm; 150 Nm at 4300 rpm; cubic capacity 1.6 litres; 0-62 in 10.8 s; top speed 200 km/h (124 mph); fuel consumption 7.5 ltr/100km

The BMW 1 Series made in Germany.

The BMW 1 Series is manufactured at the ultra-modern Regensburg plant, utilizing production facilities which provide some of the highest possible levels of flexibility and model diversity in the automotive industry, but which at the same time offer the best possible standard of present-day workplace ergonomics.

With the BMW 1 Series, the BMW Group is laying an important cornerstone for further profitable growth. Market researchers see the premium segment of the compact class as the market with large potential worldwide. Thanks to its unique vehicle concept, the BMW 1 Series will gain a disproportionately large share of the market and contribute to a further sharpening of the BMW brand profile.

Prices for the BMW 1 Series are shortly to be announced. The market launch is planned for the autumn of 2004. The BMW 1 Series will celebrate its auto show debut at the Paris Motor Show.
